To Wilder Things – Pround in 2017
2017 is going to be wildly ambitious, unnervingly awesome, incredulously impressive, and more than a little exciting. But first, a 2016 recap:
2016 Was Big
Some of you who have followed us from the start know all about our story, but for those who are just tuning in, here’s a recap. On New Year’s Eve 2015, one of us had a crazy idea: what if we made a game?
The four of us have been friends for a long time and we love playing games together, so we were all pretty excited about the idea of creating our own. Next thing we knew, an awesome team known as Pround Games was formed, and we haven’t looked back. Our first idea is still in the works (and it’s going to be awesome) but idea number 2 came from Josh in the form of Chicken Run.
In June of 2016, we launched Chicken Run on Kickstarter. We successfully funded well before our campaign ended and suddenly our dream was real. We have since been able to list Chicken Run on Amazon Prime as well as appear in different trade shows and local shops.
Chicken Run is where we made our start and landed on the map. That’s why you’ll notice our logo is a chicken. We are
proud pround of our roots and we love how we got here. But we’re not done yet.
2017: To Wilder Things
We learned a lot in 2016. It’s amazing to look back and see just how far we’ve come. But oh how excited we are to look forward and see where we’re going. In 2017, we’re going to do something incredibly ambitious. We’re going to start some projects that may seem like a weird next step for a fledgling tabletop gaming company. The next release from Pround Games will certainly be unexpected: a book.
Here’s a brief overview of our 2017 master plan: we are hoping to release two literary entries in our brand new expanding mythos The Legend of Varya. We are planning to release one game in the Varya universe, and if the cards fall just right (pun intended) we will release another game early Q4. Woah.
The Legend of Varya
A book? Two books? What?
In the fall of 2016, we began looking for our next project and a great many things were discussed. We had games about building spaceships, games about fixing cars, games about banks in the wild west, when finally, Bryan texted us all one simple sentence.
It would be really neat if I could find that sentence and quote it here, but I can’t. Basically, it said something about magic and something about Varya. And so a Legend was born.
As we began plotting out the game, the first mechanic we playtested was a fairly simple, fast-paced, “take-that” kind of game. As we began exploring the theme and the setting for the game, the mythos kept growing and growing; seemingly all on its own. But the game remained simple.
We began writing a huge story in a massive, entrancing world and we knew that our theme was outgrowing the game. We simply had to write these stories. The legend begged to be told. After much discussion, we decided to take the ambitious step into book publication.
Initially, we had planned to go to Kickstarter with a new game Q1 of 2017, but now that our legend had outgrown our game, it was time to take Brennan’s propitious suggestion and build a bigger game. A game big enough for The Legend of Varya.
But First, the Hammer
To kick off our exciting new universe, we are going to be releasing an eBook short story called Frosthammer. You’ll be able to find it for purchase on the Kindle store as soon as it comes out, or you can receive a free copy by signing up for our mailing list using the form below. We can’t wait to show you The Legend of Varya. Bring on 2017.
